Look at this <i>adorable</i> quilt my mom just finished! She made it for my sister Anna (who is not pregnant...yet), so she chose gender-neutral fabrics. The ducks are raw-edge appliqued with machine button-hole stitching. She used her favorite rotary cutter to get those accurate seams. Because this is the first quilt she's made for Anna, she wanted it to be extra special and spent hours hand quilting it.<br />

Just wanted to share one of my new favorite quilts (I think I say that every time!). This aqua and gray fox baby quilt was lots of fun to make. All of the fox squares were originally going to be the same size. A shortage of fabric called for some creativity, though, so four of the fox squares got gray sashing. I think I like how it turned out more than I would have liked the original. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.</div>

I think I just finished my favorite quilt that I've ever made. This was my first time using Art Gallery solids (I usually use Kona) and I was impressed by their softness and beautiful color. I also really like this simple Greek Cross design and I think it lends itself well with the business of the fabric on the back. April Rhode's Arizona fabrics have been wildly popular in the quilting world. I'm glad on got my hands on some of it because I can see this one going out of stock everywhere soon.</div>

I recently purchased a walking foot for my Bernina and this was my first time quilting with it. It's definitely a completely different process from quilting swirls with a darning foot, but I think it will get easier with time.</div>

Mom and I just finished up another quilt for the shop today. The design of this one is very simple, being just simple squares, by we used a mix of cotton and chenille to give this quilt something special. The chenille was a little tricky to sew on, but I love the extra softness and texture it gives.</div>

Just a quick finish for the weekend - I pieced these squares together several months ago. They were leftovers from the <a href="http://charleydeeandme.blogspot.com/2013/01/elephant-splash-baby-boy-quilt.html" target="_blank">Elephant Splash</a> quilt I did last year. I threw in a few extra prints and colors too. Sometimes you just need a really easy project, you know? Last week, mom came up with the cute elephant applique, I quilted it, and she bound it. We make quite the team, I think.</div>

Mom and I found this sherbet orange chevron flannel for the back and I think it compliments all the bright solid colors nicely. All fabrics on the front are Robert Kaufman Kona cottons. The colors are Bahama, marine, lagoon, mango, candy green, banana, medium gray, and white.</div>

This block was inspired by the <a href="http://www.freshlemonsquilts.com/?p=1113" target="_blank">Greek Cross Tutorial </a>over at Fresh Lemons Quilts. I used her basic dimensions, but I am skipping the HST triangle in the corners for a simpler look. I also think I'll alternate between white crosses and white background. I'm excited to see how it turns out.</div>

Last Fall, my mom-in-law and I put together this plus quilt. I picked out the fabric, she cut, and I sewed. The machine quilter just finished it and I think it looks better than I could have ever imagined!</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The quilt was fairly simple to put together. I found the tutorial at <a href="http://fortheloveofgeorge.com.au/archive/plus-quilt-in-progress/" target="_blank">For the Love of George</a> and used the queen size instructions. I didn't use as many colors as she recommends, so I just increased the yardage of each color a bit.</div>

I can hardly believe it's March. I am so excited, though, because in just three weeks my parents will be coming home from their <a href="https://www.lds.org/?lang=eng" target="_blank">LDS mission</a>. They've been in Italy for eighteen long months and I'm so proud of them. Once my mom is home, I'll have my quilting partner back and I'll be able to finish my projects much faster!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To get ready for her coming back, I've tried to clear some old things out of the closet and make room for the new. Like these cute <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2010/01/paintbox-quilt-along-how-to-make-classic-blocks.html" target="_blank">paintbox-inspired</a> squares that have been lying around for <i>years</i>:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyOKdNpmdsIqS-i6kEzAj0l9T4pXYISUme28VMgR-wqMXvVuMk3Rk4dzqucrJk4DzbSVz4A1YNeq0_-GUA_CK3NkU4nRce1SBv0Zsa6R9UzFlrdOXav6TMdGqhMVvjLVXTgyX7flDYpC4/s1600/2014-03-07+004+(1024x673).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyOKdNpmdsIqS-i6kEzAj0l9T4pXYISUme28VMgR-wqMXvVuMk3Rk4dzqucrJk4DzbSVz4A1YNeq0_-GUA_CK3NkU4nRce1SBv0Zsa6R9UzFlrdOXav6TMdGqhMVvjLVXTgyX7flDYpC4/s1600/2014-03-07+004+(1024x673).jpg" height="420" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ready to be quilted!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Or this little guy that has been waiting to be quilted for a couple years:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also played with these double-pinwheel blocks a little more and added sashing and a border. Not sure what the next step here needs to be yet:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope your March is starting out as productive as mine!</div>

My first five stars are now a table runner that I just need to get quilted. These stars are great for using up little scraps in your stash.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I didn't quite get my fill of making them, so I'm starting some more that are a little more scrappy looking this time.</div>

I'm getting started on a little Fourth of July project. I'm not exactly sure what it is yet, but these stars are a start.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD34ObZ_zrnmyhU9yvmsS8yrIQxczeTBlYMNywuMebpyHfgCngmdsy731Dz_fYov5G4MHso2D2J03dy-iFedic5UKMMZ_ZM0Z7ilvqjMdkQ4JfZAiDD2suCktmgr_tqGjVGxBV8O6PH0Q/s1600/2014-02-12+002+(1024x675).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD34ObZ_zrnmyhU9yvmsS8yrIQxczeTBlYMNywuMebpyHfgCngmdsy731Dz_fYov5G4MHso2D2J03dy-iFedic5UKMMZ_ZM0Z7ilvqjMdkQ4JfZAiDD2suCktmgr_tqGjVGxBV8O6PH0Q/s1600/2014-02-12+002+(1024x675).jpg" height="420" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used the same method as I did for my <a href="http://charleydeeandme.blogspot.com/2013/08/reverse-wonky-star-mini-quilt.html" target="_blank">Reverse Wonky Star quilt.</a></div>
Onesassquilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00636062328107243039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5606709809588569511.post-68476293999046821032014-02-07T19:07:00.001-08:002018-08-15T22:56:53.271-07:00Sailboat Quilt Top<div style="text-align: center;">
After a long break from quilting, I felt really good about finishing this quilt top today. The pattern turned out better than I had expected and I love the low-volume color palette. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think this quilt is a great mix of traditional and modern styles, combining the very literal boats with random squares that mimic the sky and water.</div>

<br />Onesassquilterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00636062328107243039noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5606709809588569511.post-41546184317354632922014-02-03T15:15:00.000-08:002018-08-15T22:56:53.258-07:00Sailboat Progress<div style="text-align: center;">
I made five sailboat blocks last month then left them alone for awhile. I think they're adorable but I definitely felt myself losing steam and decided I didn't want to make twenty more of them. So, I offset the blocks with white rectangles and sewed my boats in a strip. Now I'm changing gears a bit.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQeK17Bj3p1nxUTIBRW_SmotaV8p__tb7EFmUJNxPQr2zFCVU5bc9KoH__L19pPw0B0q5ExtdQO7460hjrQZgAat0SENK7PHD3putCbhRxsx69h74Bnbw4T_fa57fzbPG24VzVySRzCs/s1600/2014-02-03+001+(685x1024).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyQeK17Bj3p1nxUTIBRW_SmotaV8p__tb7EFmUJNxPQr2zFCVU5bc9KoH__L19pPw0B0q5ExtdQO7460hjrQZgAat0SENK7PHD3putCbhRxsx69h74Bnbw4T_fa57fzbPG24VzVySRzCs/s1600/2014-02-03+001+(685x1024).jpg" height="640" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I thought it would be interesting to make the rest of the quilt scrappy squares in blue and yellow, with the boats about two-thirds of the way down the quilt front. The blue squares below the boat look a lot like water, and hopefully, the several rows of yellow squares will look like a nice, sunny sky. I didn't do any kind of math, but I lucked out and 16 three-inch squares in a row just happen to be the same width of my five sailboats. Booyah.</div>

Yesterday, I pulled out this pile of blue, yellow, and gray scraps and tried to feel inspired to do something. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the first quilts I made five years ago was a sailboat quilt. I
liked it a lot and thought it'd be fun to do something similar. The
pattern I used is called <a href="http://www.mccallsquilting.com/mccallsquilting/articles/Ahoy_Matey" target="_blank">"Ahoy Matey"</a>
from the Fall 2009 McCall's Fast Quilts magazine. I'd like to sash the blocks in a unique way, I'm
just not sure how yet. <br />

I added two simple pockets on the back for a small dowel to fit inside. I also quilted the <i>heck</i> out of this thing and it was so fun! This is definitely one project worth repeating.</div>

It has been a long time since I've looked at a blog that has made me literally drop my jaw. Yesterday, I discovered Jenny Pedigo's <a href="http://sewkindofwonderful.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Sew Kind of Wonderful</a>. Go check it out. You won't be disappointed. Even though I don't have a long-arm quilter, I felt very inspired to try some more difficult quilting designs on my regular machine. I had a mini flag laying around that I pieced last month and decided to experiment on it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's how it turned out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb6BhfYMEtP9rrYPnXelma3NZi4brK1Sc92B6QL_4WjzBpY3VRS00rHgJkHRKSqfrbHpWmcPTWtRKbeHi8VORsiHhC_WaGQif8FiwhaZC7wdGPrV1biNeqK7kSZxwrmnKNS9SbImXrljM/s1600/2013-11-14+002+(1024x672).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjb6BhfYMEtP9rrYPnXelma3NZi4brK1Sc92B6QL_4WjzBpY3VRS00rHgJkHRKSqfrbHpWmcPTWtRKbeHi8VORsiHhC_WaGQif8FiwhaZC7wdGPrV1biNeqK7kSZxwrmnKNS9SbImXrljM/s640/2013-11-14+002+(1024x672).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think it's easier to see the detail from the back.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVCe6YUl9f4nGUvD2S5OUnnCTTFro_SF3eGBwBQNcCU2RjFW8odELNZAaR0PO7LnJHz9LAFYTFkCss1bHOMMY4utPBgx21r_NvAM6ct_IkBwmv73KEvj067QPUbTRtndolEJw912GBHZU/s1600/2013-11-14+004+(1024x672).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVCe6YUl9f4nGUvD2S5OUnnCTTFro_SF3eGBwBQNcCU2RjFW8odELNZAaR0PO7LnJHz9LAFYTFkCss1bHOMMY4utPBgx21r_NvAM6ct_IkBwmv73KEvj067QPUbTRtndolEJw912GBHZU/s640/2013-11-14+004+(1024x672).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was fun, different, challenging, and all that other good stuff that leaves you feeling satisfied.</div>

I've spent the last week or so finishing up some Christmas projects. Here in Phoenix, it's still warm and sunny but we've got to be having some cold weather coming any day now... First, I finished my <a href="http://charleydeeandme.blogspot.com/2013/07/frolic-variation-quilt-block.html" target="_blank">Frolic block</a> runner that I started a few months ago. I also made a Christmas runner similar to the <a href="http://charleydeeandme.blogspot.com/2013/09/striped-halloween-table-runner.html" target="_blank">Halloween one</a> I did this year. Enjoy the pictures and have a great weekend!</div>

Every once in awhile, I get in these moods where all I want to is finish up old projects. A couple years ago, I won a couple yards of Riley Blake fabric at a drawing at Quilt Retreat. When I got home, I started making several flying geese units. I don't even remember what I had in mind for them. I found them again this morning and decided that something needed to happen with them or I was just going to throw them out.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTa3UnsfZXJric77Nnyc320cs58vVcEaN5AmETM1_1ulttAHe6vMIJPq30yUAkeL6BIwaWjgHTg06X6u-NtKuME_aqoMsRX5TZTS7_OR-hrWp-LqvPwMX553kgfhexwGpIThWZhQVCmho/s1600/2013-10-25+007+(1024x685).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTa3UnsfZXJric77Nnyc320cs58vVcEaN5AmETM1_1ulttAHe6vMIJPq30yUAkeL6BIwaWjgHTg06X6u-NtKuME_aqoMsRX5TZTS7_OR-hrWp-LqvPwMX553kgfhexwGpIThWZhQVCmho/s640/2013-10-25+007+(1024x685).jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I started putting together these pinwheel-looking blocks. I'm sure there is a technical name for this pattern, but I don't know what it is.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, I just need to incorporate them somehow into a quilt!</div>

I know it's been almost a month since I've posted anything, but I haven't been sitting idly. I have been finishing the <i>biggest</i> quilt top I've ever made.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggO2qxzIfe_sXriePGnn-I9ymBztqD6-z14Zbk9nbhIOqhyKweh7D15WXVbJ3kCym8WR2CeZ8Q-xagNNLmoxeutA0sc67jnmfDnH6qgq97XB4EsPVPY_5Z6ZjC7z8brYI8u-YycVfRSGI/s1600/2013-10-09+001+%2528685x1024%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggO2qxzIfe_sXriePGnn-I9ymBztqD6-z14Zbk9nbhIOqhyKweh7D15WXVbJ3kCym8WR2CeZ8Q-xagNNLmoxeutA0sc67jnmfDnH6qgq97XB4EsPVPY_5Z6ZjC7z8brYI8u-YycVfRSGI/s640/2013-10-09+001+%2528685x1024%2529.jpg" width="428" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This quilt is going to be my sister-in-law's new bedspread for her king-sized bed.</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
She bought all the fabric and told me to turn it into whatever I wanted. I love the bold primary colors and thought something simple and geometric would compliment the traditional prints. I was inspired by a pattern in a McCall's magazine called "<a href="http://www.mccallsquilting.com/mccallsquilting/articles/Two_Simple" target="_blank">Two Simple</a>." It was actually supposed to be for just two different fabrics - red and white. I decided to keep red a main color, but throw all the other colors in to replace the large white blocks. I also made the blocks a few inches larger than what the pattern directed.</div>

A little finish this weekend that has me ready for December:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My last couple of quilts, I have tried a new binding method that I've seen a lot lately on the internet. After you sew your binding to the top of the quilt, you fold the binding to the back and top-sticth, but while still looking at the top. It requires a lot of pinning and can be frustrating, but I think the result looks very nice.</div>

Just want to show off these pictures I just got from my niece who just finished this quilt. Isn't it fun? The minky on the back looks heavenly, too. This was actually showcased in a county fair last week. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, my niece is <i>eight</i>!</div>

A Fall runner of mine recently sold that I was just starting to think I needed to keep for myself. I decided to replicate <a href="http://charleydeeandme.blogspot.com/2012/06/new-fall-runners.html" target="_blank">it</a> as closely as I could with different, but similar fabric. I used scraps from from other runners I made last year.</div>
